I totally agree with Laurence. I have visited the Lakes countless times during my life, several times a year, and I think of Ransome every time and I have never ever been disappointed. It's a question of imagination, and seeing through your eyes the 'sort' of place AR was describing. I've seen dozens of Swallowdales, none of them quite right, but they are all a thrill. There's 'Gulches' everywhere.
It is a mistake to use AR's books merely as handbooks, and take them round with you looking for locations. Leave them at home, and go out and start to imagine.
