But some of Ransome's really do. The Secret Harbour on Peel Island for one, especially if you can get there when the masses are somewhere else. It really feels quite creepy finding yourself in a place where you have never been but which is utterly familiar.

Quite so. Although I am not much interested in Beckfoot's plumbing and wiring my experience of "discovering" the secret harbour was truly sublime.
In 1972 with only the "Author's Note" at the beginning of PP to guide me I sat in my London B&B studying the ordnance survey of Coniston. Noting an island in the right place seeming to have some rocky bits to the south I persuaded my wife that we had to check it out. We hired a little wooden inboard from the village and indeed there it was. There was one other person on the island but as he seemed to be having the same type of experience we did not speak.
