Hi Dave - Standard hand mower made, if I remember by a firm called Ransome (!), had (starting from the pushing-person's end) a pair of wooden handles at about waist height, leading via curved metal arms down to a roller the width of the mower (about 2 ft.) and about 12-18ins in diameter. In front of this were the cylindrical curved blades and then at the front was the 'bin' for the grass. This was the full width of the mower and from the side shaped like a letter D. Mail me and I'll send you a picture. You pushed it along and it cut grass and left neat 'stripes' on the lawn which were very smart because they looked alternatively darker and lighter as you got to one end then mowed back again the other way and the grass was left sloping one way or the other in contrasting stripes.

And, no, I no longer have ANY grass in my garden since the children are grown and gone and I HATED mowing the damned lawn!!! Cheers - Joe
