John, you try making some of your characters behave! It's like having a particularly intractable three year old.
Even physically deleting them for a time doesn't seem to work and they simply reform in a different silhouette later on.
Complexity certainly has a lot to do with it - the more intricate the character, the more likely 'they' will say 'I don't do that!'Generally they are right too - their persona wouldn't do that particular activity in that particular way. It would be like Nancy suddenly fussing about wet clothing after a ducking on a hot summer day.
I wonder if AR's more controlled characters were the ones he was able to confine to a particular role, while others such as Nancy & Titty took over to a certain extent, and being a wise author, he let them.
Having said that, I've read about authors who poo-poo this, claiming they are always in full control. Lucky them.
