The same applies also in reverse.
A native English speaker having full knowledge of a foreign language but deciding to hide that knowledge when in the country can discover
exactly what the 'natives' think of himself/his nationality without disclosing that he understands what they are saying.
A useful (if somewhat underhand) strategy indeed!!
Doesn't work for a POM in Oz or Kiwi unfortunately!!
