Call me biased, but Missee Lee was always a favourite. My mum grew up in 1930s China and told me lots of stories as a kid. She says that ML is brilliantly researched and entirely genuine - pidgin English, bandits and all. ML seemed and still seems more familiar to me here in the Antipodes than the English books. I re-read it recently and gasped out loud when Missee Lee turns up to steer the junk through the gorge. It's a fabulous story. I have a tiny, beautiful, stroppy Chinese friend I call Missee Lee.
