I read SA starting on my seventh birthday 64-years ago. It was one of the first "chapter books" I had ever read and I had difficulty pronouncing some of the words because of the limits to my reading skills (I pronounced sugar to myself as "sugger" and pemmican as "permission" and wondered what these strange substances were). I was given SA as a birthday gift and the impetus I had to read it was the fact that my 3-year older brother was so envious of me ("I've wanted that book for ages") that I felt I had to read it before he did to keep my end up and to show I was old enough. The rest, as they say, is history.

WH still remains my all-time favourite.

Colin
