In SA, CH5:

-----
The powerful native had put down a big basket that he had brought up from the boat. In it was a milk-can and a lot of other things. The female native began taking them out as if she was digging the presents out of a bran pie.

This is when Mother, rowed by Mr. Jackson, first visited the camp on the island as they brought the hay bags for sleeping and other supplies.

The words, "bran pie" are not exactly "bran-tub" but perhaps this is the same sort of thing.

Reminds me of the concept of taking "pot luck" or of a "grab bag."

As "Forest Gump" would say: "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get."
