I've just remembered a short series of books I read when I was a child before I found Ransome; they were written by Gary Hogg and entitled; Explorers Awheel, Explorers Afloat and Explorers On The Wall.
Explorers Awheel was about the exploits of a group of friends cycling around the West Midlands following clues to various places. It was this book that kindled my interest in this fantastic island of ours.
Exporers Afloat was a similar book but on the canals of England, while Exporers On The Wall was based on Hadrian's Wall.
