The spelling "injun" may be a misspelling if you're supposed to refer to an "Indian," but within the phrase quoted, the spelling "injun" is perfectly acceptable (in fact, preferred since it takes it one step further from its original pejorative sense that implied Native Americans were not honest).

The phrase has been used in the sense of "honour bright" since 1851, on this side of the pond, and was published by Mark Twain in both Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.
