It is the same with the people building in the Colorado Front Range area - they build huge sub-divisiions in what used to be habitat for mountain lions, bear, deer and elk. When these animals come to these areas for feeding as they have for eons, they are usually killed as a nuisance. They were there first - but they don't have slick lawyers. Unfortunately, we do the same to our own kind.

Example: the Margoletta tying up on top of the Coots' nest.

I remember here when several national parks expanded, ranchers and other local residents sold their land and houses to the park system but were allowed to live out their lives in peace in their places. Upon their demise, the land became park land and the house and out buildings demolished. It seems that there are legal methods to accomodate these "hermits" without endangering "normal" people - but that is why they are hermits, they simply do not want to have anything to do with so-called "normal" people or the "system".
