Bracken [Pteridium aquilinum] is not just a 'fern-like plant', it is a fern. It reproduces by spores, not seeds, although it spreads by extending the rhizomes [tuberous roots]. In areas where it gets cold enough [e.g. Lake District] the frost kills off the fronds in autumn and they regenerate next spring.
