Perhaps it is the lack of faces that makes them so good, the scene is set for you but your imagination can go work on the actual characters. This being the big danger with film of course, and as AR found out.
I agree that certain illustrations become the standard, Milne being the classic case - forever in mind as drawn by Shepherd and not the abomination forced on to the world by the Disney corporation. My only exception to this would be the Cosgrove Hall animation of the Wind in the Willows.
