I always felt Susan would have become a very fine hospital matron - having done the 'mother' bit with her younger siblings(as indeed my own mother did) she could have sensibly concluded she'd done her bit housefrau-wise, and would be better suited to a career where 'Yes Matron' was the instant answer to her decisions.
The parallel universe idea has great appeal too and AR showed a hankering towards it by rarely putting his characters into a time context regarding age or dates.
