And Matthew in Anne of Green Gables. Killing off characters is actually a good way to move a plot on, also assisting the main character to develop as with the killing off of Dumbledore in Harry Potter - Harry now is on his own with no more effective protectors.
In addition, for many children, its the first encounter with death of a person that matters to them through the attachment of a reader to book characters. I realise it is not 'real' but at the same time it is real at the time.
