The Amazons' "puncheon" was a small barrel which fitted uder the thwart of "Amazon" The name was used by the Amazons' as an old (Piratical?) name for a barrel which they had heard, and didn't realise that it was also a standard size.
From memory there is a picture in one of the books of them carrying it under an oar. Don't have time this morning for research...
