I had expected someone else to have come up with this reply by now (I'm in the middle of marking exams). At the 1994 Ambleside AGM we were taken to the site of the original North Pole, a long-disappeared summer house at Waterhead, close to the steamer pier for Ambleside. Its exact location had been discovered by dowsing (a process about which I am highly sceptical but not totally closed-minded). There was an article about its discovery in, I believe, an early MM -- certainly in one of the TARS publications -- showing how closely the original matched AR's drawings. I haven't the time right now to hunt: perhaps someone else can provide the reference. There is (or was in 1994) a plaque let into the grass there that AR's North Pole had been on that site (I hope the vandals haven't got at it). Quite likely AR saw it in that famous winter when he was at school in Windermere and the lake froze over. (I may add that here in Northern Ontario the freezing-over of lakes is NOT a matter for great excitement).
