Manchester itself is an interesting city; there will definitely be narrow boat trips, as someone has suggested. There are excellent museums: science, industrial, aircraft, railway: Manchester has the first of the two railway stations on the world, which is incorporated into the railway museum. There is a magnificent monster of a steam engine brought back after service in South africa: it really is a beast.
Also Manchester has Roman remains.
None of this is Arthur Ransome-ish, I admit, but it is very difficult to be bored there!
P.S. It has, in the John Rylands Library on Deansgate, one of finest libraries containing ancients manuscripts, including some of the Dead Sea scrolls.
Manchester Museum itself has a fine collection of Egyptian mummies among other things, one of whom has spent a considerable time(several years) at Manchester Infirmary under examination. I don't think they are hoping for a revival, though.
No, I do not work for the Manchester tourist board!
The Cheadle Royal area has been completely motorwayed to death, but I think part of the original Hosptal is still there, I'm not sure.
