I doubt at age 12 whether someone would have been considered old enough to attend functions frequented by naval officers. Our eminent Royal personage would have been allowed to attend solely because of her position rather than her age of 13.
It is rumoured the Midshipman Mountbatten was instructed by his father to make a special effort to be nice at this event. But this is probably off topic for Tarboard.

Are we right in assuming that Midshipman Walker went to Australia in a naval ship? He may have been seconded to the naval attaché in Australia and travelled by passenger or cargo liner. This would have given more opportunity to meet Australians. I only raise this thought because a contemporary of mine spent remarkably little time at sea on RN ships (of which there are very few left) during his naval career.
