When I was about 6 or 7 we lived next door to a farm in Cheshire in the mid 40's. My delight was to go through a hole in the hedge between us and the farm, carrying our milk can, to get fresh milk for breakfast. This can was a miniature version of a 'milk churn', with a carrying handle and a lid, holding probably a pint of milk.
That would have been the type of milk can Roger would have got his milk in.
