To which I think most everyone here will respond that
they are not "just" children's books. That is to say,
they are not written just for children.

There are plenty of books written just for children, which
hold little if any interest for adults. For instance, when
I was younger I read the "Tom Swift Jr" books, and loved them.
But when I reread them as an adult, I tired of the simplistic
plots very quickly.

I think that it was in one of the AR biographies where I read
about someone's (AR's?) mother who refused to read books aloud
to her children, unless they were also interesting to her
as an adult. In my estimation, the Swallows and Amazons series,
The Chronicles of Narnia series, the Swiss Family Robinson, and
umpteen other books/series easily pass the test of being interesting
to read and enjoy as an adult.
