Hi Carla - Firstly it's a sheer pleasure to have you aboard.
Next, in handling boats there are five aspects to consider. Are you just solo; competing with others; racing; cruising; working? You work any boat differently depending upon what you are doing.
Solo - you seek to reach a private level of ability.
Competing - more able than others at boat handling.
Racing - faster than others.
Cruising - observing and searching out places to be.
Working - fishing, hauling, whatever.
So make your choice. Personally, I cruise or work. The choice determines the rig and how one handles the boat. Sail or motor.
You could sail a dinghy with a cruising rig after about 10 mins of input from someone. Small sail area, it sails slowly - but who cares, and, and. Easy - and you can do it on day 1.
Welcome aboard. Cruise with us in your mind or in fact. Respect the water - it can kill - but enjoy the wind and water and what it can give you. You can do it, Carla. That's why it's so wonderful. You don't need a Mercatile Captain's Certificate for cruising the Atlantic to enjoy the total pleasure of a small, slow, comfy boat. Cheers - Joe
