Don't worry, Owen - if Dick knew what he said he knew about acids in PP he would have known about litmus paper = pH. I started Chemistry in Junior School - aged about 8 or 9 (1940 / 41) so was well on by 12. And thanks - coincidentally I enjoyed PP yet again just last month!
Re 'silliness', it's merely a much less extreme term than that used in the scientific community about handling / use of acids. Messing carelessly with acid (in this context as in careless of the feelings of others) is as dangerous as waving a loaded gun about - with or without the safety on. Joe
