That'll be news to my sister in Wisconsin. She lives "off the grid", with no connection to the local power company, and they make do with solar and a back-up generator. Have done for years. Wind's in the planning stages. And there's also the approach documented in CC, where the Teasel brought her battery in to be recharged/exchanged for a fresh one.
