TarBoard is a 'broad church', Jock, and no one is indispensable. We all have our ups and downs. Today I had an 'up', when I found that an opinion of mine was actually expressed by AR himself seventy years ago. I have been floating all day.
Back down to earth tomorrow, but I have found much more to post about in Best of Childhood - the Old Boy really did talk sense at times. I can't recommend this book highly enough - Alan Hakim is quite right. It shows the real 'nuts and bolts' of AR's writing process. Another book I would recommend is just out - Ransome in China (also Amazon Publications) - this is a first-class account of AR's three months in revolutionary China in 1927. And it shows how Missee Lee developed - AR was so taken with China that he had to write a story set there, to include many of the little customs and incidents he witnessed. BTW, did you know that 'Cooper's Oxford Marmalade' was originally to be 'Keiller's' ?
