The old 1963 BBC series has certainly got a bit of a reputation!
I was only 9-10 when I saw it so maybe my critical faculties were not fully developed, and I viewed it without any pre-conceptions, but at the time I thought it was wonderful and it got me into AR in a big way which has not faded away 40 years later. I remember being quite disappointed by the 1974 version and at that time still had a preference for the Beeb's earlier series.
The '1963' followed the story of the book very closely, (which I read after seeing the TV filming,) and at this remove the only faults I can recall are the re-naming of Titty to Kitty (for reasons of prurience?)and the appearance of capt, Flint as a youngish guy with a bushy beard and a full head of hair. He was, however, quite convincing playing the role of angry native to John. ( at 9 he scared me!).
The amazons were very well casted, as was John. Titty(Kitty) played by a very young Susan George was a bit twee for me. I barely remember the Susan character who didn't stand out at all, and at that time fully identified with Roger who was played by a young lad with quite a lot of tousled hair, as I had at that time!
Having seen the series I plundered the school library for the books and read them completely out of synch. So characters like the D's were around and references to earlier escapades continualy surprised me, so it was quite nice to find an earlier book which explained the ref. and made it clear.
I find all the books good adventurous yarns and don't despise those that carry the stigma of 'not being realistic'. I have the full series, inherited from an older cousin, in a box in the attic - I really must get them down and re-read them sometime!
Meanwhile can some of those who find fault with the 1963 production explain what it is about the series that annoys them so...

Ronald Fraser as cptn Flint = 0
My ideal cptn Flint would be Brian Blessed!!!
