Terence, having cleaned my specs and looked again at the diagrams, I can see what the "problem" appears to be.
In my book, the diagram appears to be showing the wire coming down from the cork and curving to pass above the cross-wire and then outside, in the fresh air, before bending back under the cross- wire into the loft space again, to terminate with the lead weight. This was the configuration that my previous criticism referred to.
However if the down-wire is all entirely within the loft space then all should function correctly, as you describe. Depending on the offset between the axis for the cork axle and the axis of the cross-wire, some curvature in the down-wire could be necessary, taking appropriate care to prevent the the centre of gravity of the combined mass of wire below the cork plus the lead weight from bringing the the wire above the cork too close to the switch contacts.
