The one factor that defines the classes in England (sadly now as well as then), is accent. N&P did not speak with local accents, whereas many of the other local Lake District characters did - Jacky, charcoal burners, Swainsons, Dixons etc. The doctor did not speak with a local accent either, so I would put the Blacketts/Turners on a par with the doctor in terms of class.

The Blacketts could afford daily visits from the doctor to Nancy in WH, that would not have been cheap.

Also, who erected the rose trellis? I don't think CF did it, so Mrs B must have employed local labour.

But the Blacketts didn't have a gardener - Nancy mowed the lawn in PM. However, that never really rang true with me, I think that was a ruse on AR's part to get the "no go" message to the D's by the most interesting means!
