He didn't seem all that hesitant. He came to England from South America for Winter Holiday, went back there to prospect unsuccessfully, and then came home again for August - Pigeon Post.

And the only way to travel then was by ship. I wonder how frequent they were and how long the journey took? (Yet weekly from Southampton, Great steamers white and gold, Go rolling down to Rio...)

And once in South America he had to travel overland to wherever he was working, presumably off the beaten track. All time and money.
