Jock - I quite agree with both you and Adam, but I feel that the topic of 'class' always carries 'baggage' with it. Owen Roberts referred to it (no doubt inadvertently) when he suggested, on another thread, that we are 'taking sides'. It's not difficult to detect a certain tone when class matters are discussed. And, as Adam suggests, there is much inverse snobbery in Britain today. That is why, for me (and I emphasise that this is purely personal), to assess the precise 'class' of someone like Captain Flint simply imposes a dull socio-political burden on AR's delightful stories and characters (I except Jemmerling from that last description!)

Well, I have never detected one. The Sea Lords were 'beastly' because they stopped Daddy coming home on leave, surely?
