Well at least I didn't spell Owdon with an 'e'.

Thank goodness for that, Adam. If I write a paper about anything for Jock's 'Duffers', it will be about what possesses people to spell 'Owdon' as 'Owden'. It is not as if 'Owden' were a common name, so that it would be instinctive to spell it thus. Both versions are fairly unusual. Why do people do it? No one mis-spells 'Swainson' as 'Swainsen', or for that matter 'Snowdon' as 'Snowden'. So where the hell does 'Owden' come from? This gets me far more angry than the bl**dy class system at Beckfoot. :^)

Back to Jock's post. I can see exactly what he meant now, and I have been dim - it has been a long Tarboard day. He meant (thanks Adam) that GO was given credence in 'The Big Six', whereas the D&Gs were not, and this was due to the fact that GO was of a higher class. Oh, I don't know about that - surely the D&Gs were blamed for the casting-off all the way through the book, and GO was believed because people wanted to believe him? Well, maybe Jock has something here, but I'd have to read through B6 before deciding - could this also something we could discuss in 2016?

Well, it's getting late, so before the TarBoard NZ night shift clocks on I'll wish goodnight to everyone whatever their class, and that includes Ed (get that phone dial sorted, Ed!), and also their Highnesses Ian and Doth, and also all Canadians and I'll say 'good morning' to Prue.
