Ponies and dogs, but he didn't have either good ponies or good dogs, and only had a few "other ranks" who knew anything about them, so they weren't used efficiently.
Shackleton, or his Ross Sea party, used sails on sledges to help with the hauling of enormous loads.
However, I agree that it was "natural" to choose the North Pole, when the summer house was at the north end of the lake. Also I have been reminded off TarBoard, that AR new Nansen and admired him greatly.
