In my experience thre is usually a certain amount of 'needle' between neighbouring villages in most rural areas. It is, for the most part, just harmless fun.
The 'Lake District' is, of course, more of a Romantic Movement, and now Tourist, concept. Individual valleys historically look to their market towns for their 'character' - which one reason why they diifer so much from each other
