I recall that during my childhood, the 50's & 60's, I heard and read much more about the Artic than the Antarctic.

Oh yes. And cold and ice was North, not south. There was a romance about it; in 'Night Mail' as the train races into the night from Crewe the commentary shouts 'North! With a hundred tons of new mail to sort!' The south just didn't cut it.

And if Nansen was an acquaintance of AR, even more importantly he was the chap who got it right, reached his objectives North and South and brought his men back alive. Scott was one of the glorious failures the Brits like so much but I'm sure AR was far too sensible to see him as an example for children to follow.
