I feel the same about Timothy's age- he acts youngish. Since his hat is squashy, I assume that he grabbed it off his head when racing to the fire and stuffed it in a pocket. (Of course, I am shocked that he didn't remove his hat in the mine in the presence of young lady prospectors.)
Skipping slightly off-topic, the moment where John insists on Timothy entering the mine ahead of him is a lovely one. Naval precedence prevails, even on the land!
