These paraffin lamps were always great fun to use in the loft. I can remember having to stand behind my father to watch for stray bits of straw, wood etc catching fire. He also smoked his pipe whilst repairing burst pipes, so I had to watch for stray bits of burning tobacco as well.
This method of repair would have been common in AR’s times. Possibly the flux was more poisonous than the solder.
The last strip of plumbers’ solder that I bought about 4 months ago was marked "Not to be used on domestic water systems".
Nowadays with Primus stoves, I cheat and use a gas torch instead of meths to bring the delivery pipes up to starting heat.
