I think the night sailing idea came from the desire to get back to Titty, rather than leave her alone on WCI.
It was only when they realised it was dangerous that they moored.
I have stood at the end of Ambleside Pier at about 2300 and it really is pitch black looking over Windermere. Definitely not a time to be sailing without lights.
