I think it is more of that dreaded Ransome realism.

The Death & Glories are about 11 or 12 I believe, well even in these hyper sexual days, boys of that slightly pre-pubescent age are not likely to hang around with girls. I look at my newly turned 13 year old son and his friends to see some fairly typical young male behaviour.
