Yes, keep the references to smoking! There are several references to CF and Cdr Walker smoking (the smell of smoke the GA dislikes, the Navy Cut tins), and in WD Jim Brady smokes a pipe (he promised his uncle not to smoke until he left school). Timothy is a pipe smoker too: the matchbox in PP, and at the end of PP he and Cf are smoking their pipes.

In PD, CF lets Bill keep his chewing tobacco, but not for the others! In BS Chapter 2, George & Ralph pass them, smoking cigarettes. George is older than Tom, but is it a sign of decadence? The Hullabaloos probably smoke cigarettes!

The cigar in ML was needed for the plot. Also the two fires by the Dundale Road in PP, the first one they put out but the second one by visiting motorists who had stopped along the Dundale Road when there are “no watchers on the Great Wall” sets the fells aflame.
