What wasn't clear in the book was whether Mr Blackett was dead or whether he had gone for some other reason. I was curious because of Ransome's strained relationship with his own daughter after his divorce explain why Nancy says "He was Father" 'queerly'. He was starting to write S&A about the same time as the letter from Tabitha arrived which upset him by describing him as 'dull' (26/12/1928 - Signaling from Mars) and his further upset when trying to get his books back in January 1929. Other than the episode in SD I don't remember any other mention of the Amazon's father. But I'm sure one of you knows different.....
