It seems like there is a fine line between being totally afraid of everything and absolutely reckless. I have always been very aware of my mortality, especially when I was a kid. I think Mrs. Walker was trusting that her children had enough sense to keep out of real danger.

It is when we think we are invincible that we get into trouble. Last week the daughter (mid 20's) of some good friends and her boy friend were killed in a late night accident - winding road (yes, there are such in Kansas) and too much speed, they were not discovered for a couple of days.

But Mrs. Walker worked with John's sense of responsibility and reason which she and her husband had been instilled in him - and John knew that Mother held him responsible for the safety and well being of the others. This is not to say that all children then (as now) had that sense. And John knew that their sailing and camping privliges could and would be yanked at any time.

I don't believe that there is a set answer or way to raise offsping, but that it has to be taken one step at a time - and if I got into that, I (we - to include TarBoardistas) would be here all year!
