Most of the original Welsh speakers were around Cardigan Bay, everywhere else (and the vast majority) spoke English only.
Last time I was in Lampeter, I went to a cake shop (which did sell black sticky fruit cake), everyone was speaking Welsh. I raised a ten pound note in my hand and everyone immediately started talking English!
Nuff sed.
