I do remember Laurence, a year or two ago, posting something about 'pretentious sailing'
True, true.
For sailing, as for walking on the hills, the ideal wear is that which is no longer fit for any other purpose.
Sadly both in sailing and mountain areas the shops are full of expensive and flashy clothing. To go sailing (or fellwalking) in these clothes would cost me more than I actually spend on everything else connected with sailing (or fellwalking). But even these are better than plus fours.
It is only caving where the scruffiness of the kit is generally considered to be directly proportional to the tiger-grade of the caver - i.e. the very best are the worst dressed.
