But Ransome routinely uses "D's" as plural rather than possessive, and my 1936 dictionary gives both D's and Ds as acceptable plurals -- D's first. In elementary school, we learned to use apostrophes. By the time I was in high school, the tide was turning, so that adding s alone was the preferred plural for capital letters, while 's was retained for plurals of small letters. However, 's was still acceptable for plurals of capital letters if there was any chance of confusion. One example of correct usage given in a style manual of that era (Turabian, 1973) was, "The A's, I's, and S's in the directory were checked by one group."
