I think the point Peter Edwards was making (correct me if I'm wrong, Peter) is that an alternative Old English meaning of mere is for a boundary, in which case for those few lakes and settlements which have mere for the name, this might be the appropriate usage.
In the scope of the same question nobody has put forward any explanation to his question as to why only a few of the lakes have mere in the name. It seems that all the lakes came within the region occupied by Norse influences so why wasn't mere (for lake) applied to all of them?
Incidentally, I see in one of the web sites linked at the bottom of Tarboard : EDGE Guide to Cumbria and The Lake District, that the term Lake Windermere occurs several times!
