The cold shelf was very common, some of marble.
Mainly for keeping dairy products cool Not cold enough to keep ice cream though.
Many years ago I worked for Walls, the newspaper trick as an insulator worked well but for a very short time, we used Dry Ice which worked well but probably not available in the 30s.
My aunt had an ice box (big cabinet with a block of ice in the top)
the ice blocks being delivered on a regular basis.
This would keep ice cream a bit longer.
One assumes CF was able to pick up the ices shortly before the party.
Although I doubt AR worried about the technical aspects of ice cream preservation when writing the books.
