Trusting pictures to free hosting sites

It's not unknown for free hosting companies to accept a whole lot of pictures from a whole lot of people, and then after a year or two, when you're well and truly hooked into the service with a big investment of upload time and the risk of hundreds of broken links strewn round the internet if you pull out, to start charging you hosting fees for keeing them there.

And at least one of these free hosting sites has gone belly-up, losing everything that anyone had ever sent them for hosting. (Although admittedly that particular site did kindly offer to sell back their own pictures to contributors before it finally folded....)
