Everyone there knows what a beck and tarn are, and always
have milk in their tea, and can dip drinking water out of a
lake (after boiling.) Everyone in a small boat can sail or row,
but nobody uses any outboard motor, and as for watersking - it
is not done. There are no jetskis either.
Ed this is my mental picture of Britain too. And when I see
evidence to the contrary I just assure myself that what I see
is just a temporary aberation.
Boats are made of wood held together with copper rivets.
Railways criss cross the country in dense a grid. Trains
are pulled by magnificent steam emgines and railway carriages
have compartments with comfortable uphostelry. Narrow boats
are still carrying and the Thames Barge is the last non-motor
freight carrying vessel in Europe. I would add:
Gentlemen open doors for 'members of the fair sex' who wear
dresses and skirts.
but I fear that I would be clobbered from all sides. So I won't!
