In my case it was the other way round. Having found Secret Water, I found Pin Mill and then the Broads. After that, I borrowed the one inch to one mile Ordnance Survey map of the Lake District from the Public Library (one could borrow them, then) and was horribly disappointed. Indeed, I decided that I had been looking in the wrong place and tried to find some other part of Britain that matched. Alas, there was none, and I realised the stories were made up after all.
