Having (on a regular basis; we needed to do something with all the blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, peaches, . . .) cranked home-made ice cream (nothing but fruit (upon occasion coffee), cream, and, if necessary, sugar) I will say that the US brand Breyers at least used to be a fair approximation of the real thing, as is the Lancaster Co. PA brand Turkey Hill, or the Rhode Island Newport Creamery. Ann, for some reason, seems to think that all the extra chemicals that get thrown in to help the melted ice cream hold its shape (can't think why else they'd put them in - they certainly do nothing positive for edibility) are quite all right, as is "non-fat ice cream". She must not have grown up on the real thing.
